SEMITES

SEMITES

this week, since Hanukkah is approaching, I'm posting on my favorite people of the Jewish persuasion. I myself am an agnostic (not to be confused with atheist), that is to say that I don't know what to believe in, but I think there's something out there...
...and, while I definately do not believe in organized religion in any way, shape or form, I recognize that it's only my opinion, and that it's not my place to decide who's right or wrong.
that said, here's some of my favorite Jews in the world (in no particular order).

here's a look at a Hasidic Jew hanging around at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. someday I'll research it to learn why these goofballs chant at a piece of stone...

Kyle Broflovski. the "smart" kid in the South Park crew, doesn't mumble like Kenny, barf like Stan or act in a volatile fashion like Cartman.

Buddy Hackett. forget the TV crap. anyone who's ever seen this cat do stand-up knows he can really work a room... and make you laugh your ass off, too. impeccable comedic timing.

Garry Marshall. actually, I cannot verify this gentleman is Jewish, but he's funny as hell either way. an accomplished director, he is utterly hilarious when in front of the camera, which, incidentally, he allegedly only does for close friends in the business. his daughter is actress/director Penny Marshall. find Murphy Brown in syndication, he was great on that show.

the Three Stooges. from vaudeville to the short film features we all (well, most of us, anyhow) know and love. slapstick at it's very finest. Curly Howard, Moe Howard and Larry Fein, left to right. sorry, not a Shemp guy, me.

Perry Farrell. lead singer for alternative rock group Jane's Addiction. this dude can really belt 'em out, people. what a set of pipes. raw, with an attitude, yet can create vocal & synth lines both disturbing and sublime.

Jerry Seinfeld. he was in probably the funniest sitcom ever made. Seinfeld, the show about nothing, ruled the airwaves for years, and may just survive a half-century of syndication. yeah, it's that good.

Adam Sandler. talented, and so creative comedically. probably creating the best concept comedy films of our generation, this shot is from The Waterboy, one of the funniest films I've ever watched. Steve the Mule in the house? you bet. remember him on SNL? he can do it all.

Ben Stiller. quite possibly the most diversified comedic talent in the entertainment world, this guy knows comedy. the son of Jerry Stiller & Anne Meara, he grew up in the business. anyone remember his TV show on Fox? maybe the funniest skit comedy ever aired. one of the funniest people alive.

Geddy Lee. bass player, lead vocalist and synthesist for Canadian progressive-rock power-trio Rush. born Gary Lee Weinrib, took his stage name from his grandmother's poor pronounciation of his first name (story has it she was from the old country). noted for his screeching high note vocals, Geddy is a very creative synth player, and is at the very top of his craft as a bassist, perhaps the best rock bassist in the world, definately in the top 5. no small feat, mind you, and in his early 50's he's still blowing 'em away live. check out Rush in Rio.

well, there you have it. Shalom.
